In the Spotlight this week is the 24th AFI FEST 2010 presented by Audi, a program of the American Film Institute taking place in the heart of Hollywood this November. Kicking off the awards season in LA each year, AFI FEST offers a crucial avenue of exposure to the entertainment community, while providing appreciative audiences within a festive atmosphere and the very best of world film.
AFI FEST 2009 enjoyed record attendance, as audiences turned out in force to attend films and special events. Highlights included seven consecutive nights of gala screenings, featuring FANTASTIC MR FOX, PRECIOUS, A SINGLE MAN, and other big titles alongside a 50th Anniversary digitally re-mastered presentation of Alfred Hitchcock's NORTH BY NORTHWEST. And the star-wattage was blinding throughout the week, with tributes to Viggo Mortensen and Christopher Plummer, and actors and artists like Wes Anderson, Drew Barrymore, Angela Bassett, Kate Beckinsale, Lee Daniels, Julie Delpy, Robert De Niro, Colin Firth, Terry Gilliam, Woody Harrelson, Werner Herzog, Martin Landau, Julianne Moore, Mo'Nique, Bill Murray, Tyler Perry, Eva Marie Saint, Jason Schwartzman, Charlize Theron, and even Oprah Winfrey making red carpet appearances.
In an exciting move for Withoutabox submitters, AFI FEST announced that the 2010 event will feature a new section designed to highlight films discovered solely through the submissions process. Films in this new section are eligible for a $5,000 USD cash award, with the winner to be decided by the audience. And all AFI FEST filmmakers will feel welcome; the Festival provides lodging, guest passes, AFM guest passes, and U.S. travel.

AFI FEST presents a survey of the year's most significant films each fall. Featuring international work from emerging filmmakers, global showcases of films from the great masters and red-carpet gala premieres, AFI FEST brings world cinema to the heart of Hollywood. Since 2000, the consumer audience at AFI FEST has tripled to over 65,000 attendees.
